Memorial Day
Holocaust Memorial Day is the international day of
remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and of other
genocides. It is marked each year on 27th January – the
anniversary of the date of the liberation of Nazi death camp
Auschwitz-Birkenau. The day commemorates victims,
honours survivors and reminds us to commit to tackling
prejudice, discrimination and racism in the present day.
The Showroom is screening three fi lms in order to commemorate
this event. There will be evening screenings and
morning screenings can be arranged. Contact Geraldine
Walker on 0114 276 3534.
KZ 12A Sunday 21 / Monday 22 January
Dir. Rex Bloomstein | UK | 1hour 37mins
Working without voiceover, titles or re-enactments, Bloomstein
doesn’t aim to offer a history of the camp. Instead, he’s
fascinated with the emotional and psychological impact that
these places still have. One tour guide is an alcoholic, his 9-5
job almost too much for him too bear. Another, younger
guide affects the look of a concentration camp inmate
(shaved head, drab clothes) and stages his tours like shock
performance art. It is powerful and emotional journey.
Shooting Dogs 15 Monday 29 / Tuesday 30 January
Dir. Michael Caton-Jones | UK | 2005 | 115 mins
John Hurt, Hugh Dancy, Dominique Horwitz, Clare-Hope Ashite
Shooting Dogs pulls no punches in its depiction of the 1994
genocide in Rwanda. Michael Caton-Jones’s devastating
and powerful docu-drama takes as its core the story of a
priest who, faced with overwhelming evidence of widespread
butchery, allowed his school to become a sanctuary
for hundreds of Tutsi refugees. But the safe haven eventually
became a place of siege as, outside, howling bands of hypedup
Hutu militia, fed by insidious radio propaganda (“Who
will fi ll the graves?”) ran amok, killing with abandon.
The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas 12A

Dir. Mark Herman | 2008 | UK, USA | 1hr 35mins
Cast: David Thewlis, Vera Farmiga, Rupert Friend, Asa Butterfi eld
Based on the best seller by John Boyne an unforgettable
wartime story of Bruno, the nine-year-old son of a German
army kommandant, who is forced to leave his comfortable
Berlin life when his father is transferred to duties in
Poland.
