The late 1960s and early 1970s were a time of great change in the American film industry. Faced with unpredictable audience tastes, declining cinema attendances, political unrest and economic chaos, Hollywood responded by allowing an unprecedented level of creative control and innovation to upcoming filmmakers. Though by no means a newcomer to film direction, the late Robert Altman was one of the prime beneficiaries of this fascinating and richly rewarding era in US cinema. This course examines Altman's achievement in relation to its social, artistic and commercial context, with five examples of his finest work.

Dir. Robert Altman | 1969 | USA, Canada | 1hr 53mins
An exceptionally rare chance to see one of Altman’s pre-
M*A*S*H features, starring Sandy Dennis as a frustrated
spinster who invites a homeless young man back to her apartment
and keeps him prisoner. Filmed in wintry Vancouver,
this combination of psycho thriller and Gothic melodrama
is an early demonstration of Altman’s skill with actors.
